UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, is an innovative joint venture of the United Nations family, bringing together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations in the AIDS response to help the world prevent new HIV infections, care for people living with HIV, and mitigate the impact of the epidemic.

With its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the UNAIDS Secretariat works on the ground in more than 80 countries worldwide. Coherent action on AIDS by the UN system is coordinated in countries through the UN theme groups, and the joint programmes on AIDS.

Cosponsors include UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP,UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank.

UNAIDS helps mount and support an expanded response to AIDS, one that engages the efforts of many sectors and partners from government and civil society.  UNAIDS believes sports has the capacity to unite nations and is a powerful force for change and information sharing on issues such as HIV prevention and stigma reduction.

UNICEF protects and promotes the well-being of children and works for the realization and protection of their rights within the frameworks of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989. UNICEF aims to ensure that all children have the best possible start in life and attain a good level of basic education, and that adolescents have every opportunity to develop their capabilities and participate successfully in society. The organization also provides relief and rehabilitation assistance in emergencies.

Through its extensive network in some 155 developing countries, UNICEF undertakes, programmes in health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, the environment, child protection and other fields of importance to children in co-ordination with governments, local communities and other aid organizations. These priorities are guided by the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Sport and play are important to UNICEF because they are vital elements in the health, happiness and well-being of children and young people. UNICEF works with governments and partners throughout the world to use sport-based programmes to improve children's lives and to strengthen communities.

UNICEF teams up with leading sports organizations and world-renowned athletes to bring attention to challenges facing children and to mobilize resources to address them.

UNICEF is funded by voluntary contributions from governments and non-governmental and private-sector sources.
