Cape Cobras move into quarterfinal league stage

Sun, Oct 11, 2009 9:59 AM

Cape Cobras sailed into the quarterfinal league stage of the Champions League Twenty20 with a 54-run win over Otago Volts in their second Group C match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here Saturday.

Chasing 194, Otago were bowled out for 139 in 17.1 overs after Nathan McCullum top scored with 38.

Otago captain Craig Cumming's decision to send thr Cape Cobras to bat backfired. The South African team's captain Andrew Puttick scored the maiden century of the tournament with his unbeaten 104 as Cape Cobras made a challenging 193 for four in 20 overs.

Otago made a good start with Brendan McCullum (21) and Aaron Redmond (14) but after Brendan was run out, the batsmen failed to get a decent partnership and paid the price for poor running between the wickets.

Cape Cobras were brilliant on the field and Henry Davids stood out with his two accurate throws that dismissed McCullum and Neil Broom (5).

Earlier in the day, Cape Cobras batsmen took advantage of the perfect batting strip and the 95-run stand between Puttick and Jean Paul Duminy (32) set the foundation for their mammoth total. Justin Ontong smashed his way to an unbeaten 39 off 14 balls with four sixes.
