How many teams will play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015?
14. This includes 10 Full Members (Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe) who receive automatic qualification, and four qualifying Associate or Affiliate Members (AMs).
What is the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League?
The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL) was created in 2007 to provide regular playing opportunities for similar standard ICC Associate and Affiliate Members (AMs) in an international 50-over competition structure that also provides a qualification pathway to the ICC Cricket World Cup. This pathway has two components:
1. The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Divisions
2. The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCL Championship)
What is the difference between the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Divisions and the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship?
The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League currently includes eight divisions. Each division has six teams, except Division 8 that has eight teams. Each divisional event is played every two years and lasts 8 to 10 days in a round robin format. Promotion and relegation takes place between divisions.
The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship is the top division of the WCL. It is an eight-team competition between the leading AMs and includes seven rounds of two home or away 50-over matches. Each team therefore plays 14 matches in total.
Who is taking part in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship?
Competing teams in the WCL Championship include Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands and Scotland, who finished top six in the 2009 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier and therefore have ODI status, plus Namibia and the UAE as the top two teams from WCL Division 2 in 2011.
Which matches in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship will be official One Day Internationals (ODIs)?
Matches between the six countries that have ODI status will be classed as official ODIs. Matches where one country does not have ODI status will not be classed as official ODIs, however, in order to achieve consistency across the competition, these matches will be played under full ODI playing conditions.
How do teams qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015?
AMs have two opportunities to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, through either (i) the WCL Championship or (ii) the WCL Divisions that lead into the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier (CWCQ).
The top two teams in the WCL Championship will automatically qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2015.
The bottom six teams in the WCL Championship receive a second qualifying opportunity by participating in the CWCQ in early 2014. This 10-team event will determine the other two qualifiers into the CWC 2015.
Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong, who finished third and fourth in WCL Division 2 in 2011, will also take part in the CWCQ 2014, while the other two competing teams will be decided via the ongoing WCL divisional structure. Divisions 8, 7 and 6 were held during 2010 and 2011. Division 5 and 4 will be played in 2012, while Division 3 will take place in 2013. The top two teams in Division 3 will play in the CWCQ 2014.
How many teams will play in the ICC CWC Qualifier in 2014?
There will be 10 competing teams: the bottom 6 from the WCL Championship, PNG & Hong Kong who came third and fourth in WCL Division 2 in 2011, and the top two from WCL Division 3 scheduled to be held in 2013.
Why is there no WCL Division 2 event in 2013, before the CWC Qualifier 2014?
In order to provide a structure that allows the bottom teams from the WCL Championship to join the top teams from the WCL Divisions, a large (i.e. 10 team) CWC Qualifier 2014 was necessary. This Qualifier therefore essentially doubles as WCL Division 2, and is the same structure that was implemented prior to the CWC Qualifier in 2009.
How many ICC Associate or Affiliate Members (AM) can still qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015?
18 (as at 25 February 2012)
WCL Championship: Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia and UAE
WCL Division 3: Bermuda, Italy, Oman and Uganda
WCL Division 4: Denmark, Nepal, USA ,Tanzania,Malaysia and Singapore
WCL Division 5: Argentina, Bahrain, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Malaysia and Singapore
What happens to the teams that aren't successful in qualifying for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015?
The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League is a rolling structure, so teams that can no longer qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will remain part of the WCL, and begin to focus on qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
How many teams will play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019?
In April 2011 the ICC Board decided that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 would be a ten-team tournament. Qualification for this event, will, however, not be automatic for all Full Members.
