ICC U19 Cricket World Cup - Global Qualifier

Ireland won the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, sealing the title after defeating Vanuatu by 291 runs in its final qualifying game.

It will be joined at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in New Zealand by Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, Canada, the USA and Hong Kong.

Ireland has had a remarkable run at the tournament winning all its games except one, losing to USA by 42 runs.

Star player was Paul Stirling, who turned 19 during the event, and who was the leading run-scorer with 423 runs in eight matches, including 164 against Vanuatu.

Afghanistan, who arrived late for the event due to visa issues, sealed an excellent second place at the tournament, losing only to Canada and Ireland at the tournament, with Zakiullah Zaki finishing as the top wicket-taker with 21 wickets.

"I am very happy especially for the people back in Afghanistan," said skipper Shir Mohammad Shirzai. "It is a great achievement for the country. All the boys are really excited. It has been a dream to play in a World Cup against some of the big nations like India and Pakistan."

Canada also secured its place in the ICC U19 CWC and Usman Limbada, who made a brilliant 126 against Vanuatu, admitted his side was excited about the opportunity.

"For most of us, it will be the first time we will be playing in a World Cup,? said Limbada. ?It can really change our lives by playing high-level cricket against some good teams and I really think that we can be competitive at that event as we have a really good team.?

USA secured a place in the 2010 event after an exciting 33-run victory over the Netherlands. Captain Shiva Vashishat said: "People don't realise that cricket is growing fast in the USA. But now that we have qualified for the World Cup, it shows the pace of its growth and popularity of the sport.

"We are looking forward to come hard at the bigger teams at the World Cup and do well. It will be a very good experience as we all want to make it to the senior team."

There was a further boost for the side when the USA's Ryan Corns was named the Player of the Tournament at the event. He was his side's leading run scorer with 230 runs and he also took 13 wickets.
